Thank you for taking the time to help me understand what has been happening to me over my years as a cop and showing me how I can point the way for others to understand also. I am one of the lucky ones who hasn’t gotten to the trouble stage yet and I have NO intention of ever getting there. What I have learned from you is that there is an alternative to PTSD, and that is by taking care of ourselves along the way and staying emotionally strong and healthy before something happens. I have already seen a therapist, per your suggestion, and we are setting my goals to finish out my career and have a good HAPPY retirement.
How freeing it is to know that there is something at the end of this career besides bad memories and a bottle.
God bless you all for the time and devotion you put into The Badge of Life. It’s a shame it’s ignored as much as it is. Ignorance is bliss, nowhere more than in the leadership of law enforcement. I will be doing my best to pass it on and I wish you many years of doing the same.
Dear Grateful: Your comments are deeply appreciated. You could not have mirrored our program more clearly. We're deeply happy to have been of value in your career and wish you the best of journeys into a happy and healthy retirement!

I retired with rank from a major metro agency and walked away proud of many things and not so proud of some, but one of the things I wish I had left behind was a better program to take care of the minds of the men and women under me. There is so much meaningless talk and BS that goes on, with no one really wanting to accomplish anything from the top. Badge of Life is so right, that it is easier to go through the motions with a bare bones program and blame the officer for not getting the help when the stress finally catches up with them.
Your job is not an easy one, because you are asking commanders to step forward and be counted. None of them want to do that. I am glad to see you also doing the next best thing, however, by going to the officers themselves and showing them a way of taking care of themselves. Your mental health checks, which you place under the control of the officers, are a brilliant idea. Ultimately, voluntary compliance and gaining the trust of the individual officer will be the key to the success of your ideas.
I wish you all the success possible. The best ideas take time, and law enforcement is the slowest of all to accept change. They do change, however.
