Message To The Badge Of Life, thank you so much for all of your hard work. I am currently a EMT-I for a 911 service out of Minneapolis Twin Cities area. I came across your site as I am currently working on a research paper on Mental Health in Criminal Justice. I have chosen my topic to be Police and Suicide. One reason is I have worked hand in hand with Police for the past seven years I see and know what the job can and does do. Many things we have become so desensitized to and other situations leave gaping wounds in our hearts. I have began going back to school to receive a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice and this web sight and the information you have collected will help me greatly in striving for a paper on why this is happening. I read a few passages down from me where someone wrote leave this topic alone and if you can't hack it get another job. If that is the type of action that person wishes to stand for that is great but eventually the job will catch up to each and ever responder and we need and outlet and a scource to cope with the stresses of the job. And furthermore when someone writes an arguement on this hopefully next time they spell things correctly like they should be doing each and every day on legal documents!!! Smile I will be on this site quite a bit collecting information and some day I hope that this research project may open my eyes to the possiblities of finding other ways to help all public responders in this situation. We should not be afraid to say the word SUICIDE, and we should not be afraid to walk away from someone that is in need of help. The Badge is an honor and with it I pray they don't hide away their pains and become too macho to know that things in life that they see do HURT.. But having those pains is what I tell myself every day. "It is ok to feel them or otherwise I would not be a human at all."

Message Great site. Thanks for taking the time to help those who have fallen through the cracks. If we could help one brother or sister get through their obstacle..then it is all worth it.

Individuals who make disparaging comments regarding this subject/site are the one's who haven't lost a brother or sister in this manner or have another agenda...perhaps guilt. If there isn't something here for you...then move on.

Message Dear Guardian:

Thank you for sharing. As has often been said, denial is not a river in Egypt, therefore you may be happy to know we already have a bed reserved for you when you're ready Smile

Kidding aside and agree or not, do take care of yourself in this terribly punishing job.

Andy, Badge of Life

Message Hat to bust your bubble but if a cop can't handle the stress of law enforcement he should get another job like hairdressing. Suicide is an act of a coward and selfish and we should care less when some one takes the coward's way out. Leave it alone. The rest of us are doing out jobs and we're doing fine.

Message The Badge of Life is a breath of fresh air. I have "been there" too. The job tore me apart after 16 years and when I turned to my department they sent me to a person who all they wanted to talk about was how I drank too much, how much I had screwed my marriage up (a divorce) and how I should find another job. They said no way was it the job because there was no big shooting or big thing I could talk about. After I talked to you a year ago I dropped them and found my own therapist that I picked myself and learned I was a good cop who had been through too much and that it wasn't my fault after all. It had just all built up. I hold my head up now and I am glad I didn't kill myself and give them the satisfaction of throwing me on the trash pile. Thank you for what you do.
