Message Dear KH:

Thank you for your very moving comments, and my heart goes out to you for manner in which the loss of your fine husband and officer was handled.

Yes, we believe as many as 37% of police suicides may have been missed, either due to misreporting or our own research error. Those are built into the study before coming up with the 141 annual suicides, so they are, we feel, adequately covered.

Nonetheless, the thought of each one that is misreported or concealed out of misplaced "shame" is painful. Too many departments are unwilling to look at the true circumstances behind the suicide. In their ignorance, they deprive us of the very information we need to save future lives.

Message This site and organization is exactly what I've been looking for. You have a wealth of information, training materials, and links to helpful sites. Thanks for all your hard work. My husband, a Lt. with a local law enforcement agency, a 30 year police veteran, FBI Law Enforcement Academy graduate, and father to 2 girls and 2 step children committed suicide July 14, 2007 in Virginia. He was dealing with a department and town council rife with cronyism and was eventually targeted for many reasons including his age. He was only 5 months from retirement. His story was not reported in any of the local newspapers although I had put in the request to the editor. I was told that the Mayor had requested that they not publish anything and refused my reguest. I wonder how many suicides may not have been captured in your statistics due to similar circumstances. Many Police Departments as well as their "bosses" the Town Manager or Council want to cover up a suicide to avoid bad publicity or worse an investigation into the corruption of their department. By the way, the newspaper eventually published a tribute to my husband a couple months later due to the request of numerous citizens, organizations that he was involved with, local College officials, and many, many of his law enforcement co workers and friends. Still, nothing was mentioned of his suicide.

Message Excellent website and video, I have searved 11 years in the Royal Ulster Constabulary in Northern Ireland and mainland British Police Forces. This highlights that police officers are not just uniforms but a person behind it.
